Popular but highly controversial Nigerian investigative journalist and media personality, Dr Kemi Olunloyo has revealed what usually becomes of her health whenever she eats traditional Igbo soups. According to her, every traditional Igbo soup gives her diarrhea, as such, she has hatred for every soup belonging to the Igbo people.
She further alleged that her doctor who’s is an Igbo person made it known to her that Igbo people uses yam as thickeners while making their soups, which she strongly condemned as not being good to the health.
In her exact words, “every Igbo soup gives me diarrhea. My doctor who’s Igbo says they use a yam thickener. Why the hell will anyone do that?”
Further, she added, “can’t eat Oha, white soup and the unhealthy Banga palm oil nonsense. Start avoiding cholesterol this 2023.”
Though it is not clear if her post is a honestly expressed personal experience or there’s a motive behind it, most especially as she has a trademark for making controversial comments on social media. Yes, because many of those who have reacted to the post have countered her claims on Igbo soups causing diarrhea and the use of yam thickener in preparing their soups, they said the use of such is based on individual choices.
On the other hand, the Igbo people are predominantly from South Eastern Part of Nigeria, but some others are found in some other neighbouring states like Rivers State, Delta State, Kogi State, etc. And frankly speaking, the Igbo people has one of the stomach most friendly delicacies, including their soups.
