There’s nothing one won’t wake up to hear, meet or experience on daily basis, especially in this part of the world. Well, there was a melodramatic scene which played out at the recently inaugurated Nigeria’s House of Representatives, precisely on Wednesday July 12, 2023.
The drama in question followed the action of the Green Chamber meted out to one of a fresh member of the House, who failed to abide by the House dressing code. The said lawmaker whose name is yet to be made known to the public was said to have casually dressed to the day’s plenary, against the Green Chamber’s stipulated and acceptable code of dressing.
The said lawmaker was reported to have entered the Green Chamber dressed in a red T-shirt and brown coloured trousers. While he reportedly sat at the upper gallery of the chamber, it was towards the end of the day’s session that his outfit drew attention of his colleagues. The first person to react to the dressing of the yet to be identified lawmaker was Honourable Billy Osaweru, who immediately raised a point of order.
The House Speaker’s attention was immediately drawn to the issue, and without hesitation the Speaker admitted that the outfit of the lawmaker contravened the stipulated style of dressing within the House.
He was eventually asked to leave the Green Chamber, on the ground that he should go and dress properly, according to the House dressing code. Meanwhile, many of his colleagues laughed as they watched him leave the House as instructed by the new Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas who was just recently elected speaker of the 10th House of Reps, precisely on June 13, 2023.
Though the embarrassed lawmaker never returned to the day’s plenary as the house adjourned almost immediately. And expectedly, the incident had since sparked mixed reactions from people, especially Nigerians, of which many hailed the bold action of the Speaker.
